How to Color Block For Beginners

color block

Do you know how to color block? If not, no worries! The color blocking trend has been all around this year, but of course, I was late to the game when it comes to putting a specific look together. Lucky for us, the trend seems to be sticking around based on some of the looks I’ve seen from both NYFW and PFW. To be honest I don’t really know the rules on how to actually go about color blocking. I just love the idea of playing with colors, which I feel people don’t do often. So I decided to look up some helpful hints to put a look of my own together.

First off, there is a theory to color blocking, and that theory is color theory. Again I’m not an expert on this. However, there is a color wheel that I found online that can help you begin your journey. The weheel is divided into 3 combinations which are Complementary, Analogous and Triadic.

Complimentary would be choosing 2 colors that are on opposite ends, Analogous would be choosing colors that are next to each other and Triadic is choosing 2 or 3 colors that are 3 spaces apart. The color wheel below demonstrates how easy it is to achieve each of these. combinations.

For this particular look, I wasn’t quite sure which combination I wanted to go with. I already had the shirt, which I got at a thrift store about 3 years ago. As you can see, the shirt itself is major color block goals on its own, so I knew the bottom had to compliment all the colors of the shirt. I found these pants at H&M. As soon as I saw it, I knew it would be the perfect fit. Since the top was so bold in colors, I knew I had to tone is down a bit with the pants. I guess you can say this outfit is a bit of a mix between Analogous and Triadic.

I’m pretty proud proud of myself for this look and I’m going to continue to play with color blocking as we get further into Fall. With that said, I challenge you to give color blocking a go. Look at the color wheel, put something together and send it to me HERE.
